Most lower back pain caused by degenerative disc disease is often challenging to treat. Degenerative disc disease is a condition in which the discs in your lower back start to wear down and grind against each other. Several factors can cause discs to be degenerate, including age, tears in the outer portion of the disc due to daily activities and sports, and injury. Unlike other body tissues, there is very little blood supply to the disc. Which means once a disc is injured, it cannot repair itself and can start to deteriorate. Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spine. When the spine space decreases, this, in turn, puts pressure on the nerves passing through the spinal canal. There are a variety of reasons for a person to develop spinal stenosis. In some cases, it is a congenital disorder a person is born with, or a person tends osteoarthritis or has an injury that weakened the spine, making it more susceptible in other circumstances. Most commonly, this is found in the neck and lower back. Most patients have had chronic pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness of the lower or upper extremities.
Neuropathic pain is often described as a shooting or burning pain. Neuropathic pain is unrelenting and severe, and sometimes it comes and goes. It usually is the result of nerve damage or a malfunctioning nervous system. The impact of nerve damage is a change in nerve function both at the site of the injury and areas around it. Neuropathic pain often seems to have no apparent cause. But some common causes of neuropathic pain include diabetes, multiple sclerosis, thyroid issues, spinal compression from herniated discs or arthritis, alcoholism and much more.

Dr. Paul Meyer is the best! I'm sure Dr. Jeff Meyer (his son) is too. I've met him once and he was very nice to me. I have chronic pain from degenerative joint disease including arthritis in lower back with herniated discs above and below a vertebrae fusion done in '97. If it weren't for his care, I'm sure I would be in much more pain and would have had surgery long ago. Thank you Dr. Paul for the care you have, and are giving me! P.S. Great bedside manner. He's so easy to talk to and genuinely cares!

Dr. Meyer's technical skills are superior to other pain physicians from my perspective. Always treats me with respect and dignity as he does any staff working along him. It is rare in this day and age to find a Christian physician. It has been my practice to refer persons to him who are experiencing un-controllable- pain. Because of his heavy patient work-load, the wait seems long, but when comparing him to family practice physicians (who schedule 4 patients for every 15 minute time slot) the
